How Do You Find the Ideal Folding Treadmills?
By Michael Browne
Folding treadmills are ideal for those with space restrictions, as they can easily be stowed away after each workout or to ease transport from one location to the other. Yet not all treadmills are created equal, so it's important to choose one that not only fits your space but also will provide you with years of running and/or walking satisfaction.
Although they tend to be of lesser quality than non-folding models, there are plenty of good automatic and manual folding treadmills on the market. You just have to know what to look for.
One of the main components of any motorized piece of exercise equipment is, as you might have guessed, the motor. If the motor isn't strong, you can bet the machine will not be working for that long, and will probably require frequent maintenance. The best folding treadmill motor will have at least two horsepower of continuous duty; something in the range of 2.5-3.0 is ideal and will ensure many years of moderate to heavy usage.
For the larger individual or those that like to run freely, look for folding treadmills with wider running surfaces. A twenty-inch belt will offer you plenty of room to exercise. However, for the smaller individual or the casual walker, a smaller footprint is fine. Seventeen or eighteen inches is plenty for these exercisers...it's simply a matter of preference, so choose the automatic or manual folding treadmill that you are comfortable with.
The best folding treadmills will always come from the best manufacturers, so choose a well-known brand with a history of building high quality machines. Don't just walk into a wholesale place and buy the cheapest unit you can find. Although higher price doesn't always mean a better treadmill, you can rest assured an extremely cheap one will not provide the workout or the longevity you are looking for.
Choosing between an automatic and a manual folding treadmill is a personal choice, and there are high quality models in both categories. Automatics tend to be more expensive, but most good folding models are easy to work with. If you don't mind doing a little extra work before and after you exercise, then go with a manual treadmill.
The last consideration will be the extras...heart rate monitor, preset programs, inclines, speeds, hand rails, remote controls, etc. Each optional feature will no doubt add to the bottom line, so choose the features that appeal to you the most. It's definitely good to have more speed and incline capability, but do you need the TV or fan? The best folding treadmills come with any added option you can imagine, so know your budget and buy accordingly.
Automatic and manual folding treadmills offer a great cardiovascular workout, and make a great addition to any home gym environment. If you are in the market for one, make sure you do your research first...you'll be glad you did.
