Troubleshooting Your Treadmill- Ask The Treadmill Doctor

So, you're treadmill's not running just the way it's supposed to. Before you lug that heavy thing back to the shop and start negotiating for a refund, let's talk to the treadmill doctor. This quick troubleshooting guide should help you solve some of your simple treadmill problems without having to drag it back.
Problem - When you jump on your treadmill to start exercising, it slows down; or it starts to slow down after you've been on it for a few minutes, and then it goes back to its regular speed after you get off.
Solution - The problem is your belt. First take a look at it. It may just need to be cleaned. You can get cleaning cloths and belt lubricant at any fitness supply store.
If the belt is worn and ragged around the edges, it may need to be replaced. Your owners' manual will tell you how to do this. It will basically involve moving part of the deck, unscrewing some things, taking off the old belt, and putting on the new. It's not a big job. One thing to remember: don't cut off the old belt. Take it off properly, so you'll understand how to put on the new one.
Problem - The motor just won't get started. It tried a little, and then poops out entirely.
Solution - You've probably got a dust problem. You'll need to take off the deck hood and do some cleaning. This isn't a bad thing to do every once in a while just to keep it running smoothly. Look at your owners' manual. It'll walk you through it and it won't be more complicated than just unscrewing a few things. While you're down there, put some lube on the belt.
Problem - No power, or no power on the treadmill's electronic display.
Solution - Now, I don't mean to sound condescending, but make sure it's plugged in. I don't mean to insult you, but that's the reason for the problem probably 90% of the time. Also, check to see if the socket may be bad. Plug something else in and see if it works. Okay, I don't think you're an idiot; I just had to mention that!
If it isn't getting power, that means that the wiring is bad. If the treadmill runs but the electronic display won't work, this means there's a problem internally. Fixing this yourself is most likely impossible, so you might have to have someone from the company or dealer look at it. Faulty electronics is not a common problem with treadmills, but it does sometimes happen.
When you buy a new treadmill, it's always a good idea to go ahead and get the extended warranty. They usually come with a 90-day warranty, which really isn't that much if you think about it. That's only 3 months, and there are so many parts of a treadmill that can have problems. If you pay a little extra, you can make sure you're covered in case there are problems.
